Time keeps on Slipping
Traveling further south in Baja California Sur and a detour to catch surf on the Pacific coast.
Since I last wrote we have been to three new places in Baja California Sur: Bahia Concepcion, Loreto, and San Juanico aka Scorpion Bay. Currently we are in Scorpion Bay where we celebrated the new year and surfed a 4 day swell that was hitting the Pacific Coast. We had no idea when we arrived and we were told it was good karma:) More on this later..
The photo above is where we spent Christmas. We were camped here for over a week and it was a beautiful bay that boasted calm waters for paddling and great fishing. We saw dolphins many days in the bay and SUP’d and snorkeled almost every day. We camped next to several Canadians that spend every winter here and they were very nice and shared fish and stories with us.
Then we drove 1.5 hours South down the coast to Loreto. Known as the ‘magic city’ we stayed one magical night here and paid around $15 USD to camp in a gated lot and had access to bathrooms and showers. We walked around and ate delicious food and luckily didn’t get sick. We met up with friends we crossed the border with and swapped stories. This town also has an airport that many people fly to and from.
The next day we drove 4.5 hrs across Baja over to the Pacific side to the little town of San Juanico well known as Scorpion Bay. We had heard from friends to visit if we wanted to catch some waves and the day we arrived there was a buzzing in the air of the swell that was going to hit over the weekend. The storm from San Diego that caused flooding and massive waves was going to hit the bay.
There are eight point breaks at Scorpion Bay so there’s something for every level of surfer from beginner to advanced. We went into the tiny town on the rocky dirt road and found the only surf board rental shop and got a board. We happened to stumble across one of the top 10 places in the world to surf when the swell is good.
So many campers vans and trucks lined the rocky coast line all in the name of stoke. We proceeded to surf for the next 4 day in a row at point break number 2 that had 2-3 foot waves and every morning we would walk out to the other points with the dogs and watch the surfers ride 4-6 + foot waves.
We caught some epic waves and by the end of the fourth day every muscle was sore. We spent New Year’s eve with campers and had a pot luck dinner with an array of dishes including paella, lobster pasta, and fajitas. We made friends with the people camped next to us a Brazilian named Katrini and her boyfriend Andreas from Italy. She was like an older sister giving us career advice and pushing us onto waves.
Draco celebrated his 7th birthday last week and they are both adapting well to Baja. Orca has been socializing with other dogs and they enjoy early morning walks and relaxing in the cool of the shade in the afternoon.
We have been making so many connections with people out here and it’s true about what they say -if you want to make friends on the road just come to Baja!
